Spring Cleaning in Your RV

For many people, the first signs of spring means preparing the RV for traveling and camping. Just like you winterized your RV in the fall, you must de-winterize it for hitting the road in the spring to prevent trouble down the road. Here are some tips to get you started.

Exterior

  • Start by washing the exterior of the RV. It helps to use an extendable brush and RV shampoo.
  • Once clean, inspect the exterior for damages, such as roof deterioration or cracks in the sealing around doors/windows.
  • Inspect the undercarriage and immediately repair any leaky or worn hoses.
  • Consult the owner’s manual for direction on when to replace the tires. But remember that severe weather can cause tires to wear down faster.

Interior

  • If your RV has a musty odor, open the doors and windows to let it air out for a day or so. You may also consider replacing the moisture absorbing system.
  • Inspect the interior for damages, which were likely caused by pests looking for shelter during winter.
  • Curtains, sheets and other fabric items can be removed and washed to freshen things up.
  • Vacuum the floor and clean the dust off the countertops.
  • Clean the windshield, inside and out.

Maintenance

  • If you notice any major damages or mechanical issues, have a professional complete the repairs as soon as possible.
  • Change the oil and top off fluids as needed.
  • Test the electrical and plumbing systems, as well as the appliances. Slides and awnings should also be tested.
